Z890 is reasonably future-proof. Intel has committed to the LGA 1851 socket for at least one more CPU generation beyond Arrow Lake, so your Z890 board should accept the next Intel desktop CPU family with a BIOS update. DDR5 memory will remain the standard through 2027 and beyond. WiFi 7 routers are just starting to roll out, so buying a Z890 board with WiFi 7 now means you will not need a wireless upgrade for years. PCIe 5.0 GPUs and SSDs are just hitting the market, and Z890 is ready for them.
What CPU goes with Z890?
Z890 motherboards work with Intel Core Ultra 200S (Arrow Lake) desktop processors. The current compatible CPUs include: Core Ultra 5 225, 225F, 235, 245K, 245KF; Core Ultra 7 265K, 265KF, 265, 265F, 270K, 270KF; and the flagship Core Ultra 9 285K and 285. The K and KF variants support CPU overclocking, which is the main reason to choose Z890 over the upcoming B860 or H810 chipsets. None of these CPUs work with older LGA 1700 motherboards, and LGA 1700 CPUs do not work in LGA 1851 sockets.
Do I need WiFi 7 on my motherboard?
WiFi 7 (802.11be) is worth having for future-proofing, but it is not essential in 2026. If you have a WiFi 7 router, you will see real-world speeds up to 4-5 Gbps, which is faster than wired 2.5GbE. If you have an older WiFi 6 or WiFi 6E router, WiFi 7 falls back gracefully but you are not getting the full benefit. For most builders, WiFi 7 is a nice-to-have that adds $20-50 to the board price, but you should prioritize VRM quality, M.2 slot count, and connectivity over WiFi 7 specifically.
